Mizuho PRIDE

Heritage Month 2024

Visual Concept

Every year for Pride Month, Mizuho’s Creative Services team is tasked with creating a visual concept that aligns with a specific theme for the month provided by the Mizuho Pride Employee Network (PRIDE). The concept is used for multiple deliverables and internal events throughout the month in order to help celebrate Mizuho’s diverse employees.

This year, the theme was “Return on Equality,” a play on words on the commonly known finance term “return on equity.” The PRIDE Network came up with this theme in hopes of shining light on the “value” of DE&I, specifically as it relates to the LGBTQIA+ community. The PRIDE Network also made it clear that they wanted to include real statistics in the graphic, both positive and negative, in order to not only celebrate their successes as a community, but also to bring attention to the work that still needs to be done.

In order to achieve the PRIDE Network’s goals with this graphic and do justice to their cause and inspiration for the theme, I decided to create a line graph. In my design, the composition creates a dual visual representation of both a line graph and a mountain. The line graph represents the literal “value” of the LGBTQIA+ community as it relates to the mathematical concept of “return on equity.” The mountain tells a more detailed story of the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community, representing a long history of oppression and resilience.
